The world’s first coca-bomb mold was created in China by a Chinese scientist, according to the Associated Press news agency.
The first batch of coca bombs was produced in 1976 and have since been used by the Chinese government and military to help eradicate poverty in South America.
The original coca plant has since been replaced by more effective plant varieties.
The AP reports that Dr Zheng Zhang, who is also a chemist, had been developing the mold for nearly 10 years before finding a way to grow the plant by taking a mixture of plant material and injecting it into the soil.
“The coca plants have a unique genetic structure and they do have a lot of energy,” Dr Zhang told the AP.
“We’ve been trying to find ways to get rid of this energy, which makes the coca a very good plant to use for chemical synthesis.”
Dr Zhang is believed to have patented the invention in 2009.
He has since sold the mold to Chinese companies to produce their own.
The plant has been sold in China as a chemical and fertilizer treatment and as a medicinal product.
“Cocoa is the most important food crop in the world,” Dr Zeng told the BBC.
“There are thousands of varieties, so we’re just trying to figure out how to make one that we can put in a home.”
China is currently a member of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), which is responsible for drug control in the region.
“This is the first time that we’ve made a drug that can be used to treat a common human disease,” Dr Wang said.
“It’s going to help us develop new medicines for the population.”
The AP report says the US-based Chinese firm Industrial and Commercial Co Ltd, which manufactures the mold, has since launched a joint venture with a UK firm to produce coca derivatives for use in the pharmaceutical industry.
“Our partnership will provide the largest market for the manufacture of cocaprosyn,” Dr Zheng said.
